INDONESIA AT GLANCE

Indonesia, the largest archipelago in the world, stretches along the equator from 6 0 08' north to 11 0 15 south latitude and from 94 0 45' to 141 0 05' east longitude, a distance of some 5,110 kilometers from east to west, in the other direction, the distance is 1,888 kilometers (from 6 0 north to 11 0 south). The emerald chain of islands divides the Indian ocean and Pacific Oceans at the equator. No other country has as many islands as Indonesia, which number 13,667, around 6000 inhabited by 180 million people. There five major islands, 30 smaller ones and thousands of islets.

The one almighty god has endowed Indonesia with many attributes and characteristic not found anywhere else. The combination of year-round sunshine combined with abundant rainfall have resulted in the creation of the country's lush rain forest and its unique ecosystem giving rise to a rich and interesting assortment of creature and plant life. Over 300 volcanoes contribute to its enriched soil, while mountain, rivers and glittering lakes round out its diversified landscape. Both its land and waters teem with natural resources, which in turn, has attracted overseas interest. There are still many who refer to Indonesia as paradise on earth ‘a string of emeralds on the equator'.

Indonesia scenic beauty is in some areas unsurpassed, with a combination of terraced rice field rimmed by majestic mountains and rolling green hills, The country's more than 300 volcanoes include the Jaya Wijaya peak in Irian Jaya, mount Kerinci in Sumatra, mount Semeru in Java, mount Api on the island of Sangir, mount klabat in North Sulawesi, mount Rinjani in Lombok, mount Agung in Bali and the island that holds the remains of Krakatoa, which erupted in 188, producing a tidal wave that swept over the coastal plains of South Sumatra and West Java.Indonesia rivers provided major transport routers, especially in Kalimantan , both for ocean-going vessel as well as for local travel, while the rivers of Java provided water for irrigation, purpose and for man-made dams that supply electricity. Most of Indonesia lakes in the mountain regions of Irian Jaya, Kalimantan, Java, Sulawesi, Flores, Lombok, and Sumatra where lake Toba with its magnificent scenery, attracts visitor years-round.

The fauna on the archipelago is a varied as the flora the tiger, rhinoceros, orangutan, and elephant and tiger, now protected species, are found on the islands of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Java, and Bali. On the islands of Lombok are the Rinjani and Komodo National park, where the prehistoric like Lizard, The komodo, lives out his days. Sulawesi is home to two species native to the island and not found anywhere else-the deer hog or Babirussa and the dwarf buffalo, the Anoa depressions, The Balinese Jalak bird resides in a National park in west Bali and Irian Jaya and Maluku barbor the beautiful bird of paradise. Indonesia seas are rich fishing ground and also yield such products as pearls and another commodities with promising overseas market. The water around North Sulawesi and Bali are alive with marine life, which reside in colorful coral reefs as Bunaken marine park, in Banda sea, at Maumere in Flores and just off the coast of Jakarta at Pulau seribu.
